How IKONYX Works

Define the uncertainty. Fix what can be fixed.

Physical product development is never completely predictable.

That does not mean it needs to be commercially open-ended.

IKONYX structures development so that uncertainty is reduced before larger commitments are made.

Feasibility comes first

Before promising a development cost, we need to understand enough about the problem.

Technical risk.

Manufacturing route.

Target cost.

Tooling.

Regulation.

Supply chain.

Commercial constraints.

The purpose of feasibility is not to answer everything.

It is to answer enough of the right things to make the next commitment intelligently.

Then we can define development

Once the important unknowns have been reduced, we can define:

the outcome,

the assumptions,

the budget,

and the milestones.

That changes the conversation from selling hours to taking responsibility for an agreed result.

Fixed does not mean inflexible

New information will appear.

A test may reveal something.

The client may change a requirement.

A supplier may identify a better route.

The answer is not to pretend this cannot happen.

The assumptions are made visible so genuine change can be separated from ordinary development risk.

Certainty where certainty is possible. Clarity where it isn’t.

Tooling remains a visible decision

Tooling is a major capital commitment.

It should not disappear inside a development fee.

IKONYX develops the tooling strategy alongside the product, but the investment remains visible and is approved by the client.

The same applies to production pricing.

Volume, materials, specification, currency and other relevant assumptions should be clear.

The budget belongs to the outcome

The question is not:

How many hours can we sell for this budget?

It is:

How do we use the available budget intelligently to reach the required outcome?

Sometimes that means more engineering.

Sometimes an early prototype.

Sometimes talking to the toolmaker sooner.

Sometimes accepting a risk rather than paying to eliminate it.

Experience is partly knowing where certainty is worth buying.

The development programme is supposed to end

Feasibility.

Development.

Tooling.

Production.

The relationship should progressively move from spending money on uncertainty towards making and supplying something customers buy.
