MagicTrix - dental matrix band

The cost of getting it wrong

When a Simple Product Isn’t Simple

The Challenge

MagicTrix had spent years supplying dental consumables and understood the market well.

The matrix band was already a successful product category for the business, selling in volumes that justified investment in their own product rather than continuing to rely on third-party suppliers.

On paper, the opportunity appeared straightforward.

In reality, it was anything but.

The product needed to be manufactured in very high volumes, perform consistently, satisfy medical device requirements and achieve an extremely sensitive target cost.

An initial attempt using separate development and manufacturing resources resulted in thousands of unusable products and a valuable lesson in the risks associated with fragmented product development.

The Risk

Products manufactured in the millions leave very little room for error.

Every design decision affects:

  • Material consumption.
  • Production cycle time.
  • Product performance.
  • Manufacturing cost.
  • Supply chain resilience.
  • Regulatory compliance.

At the same time, the product needed to satisfy the requirements expected of a medical device manufactured under ISO 13485 quality systems.

The challenge was not simply creating a working product.

The challenge was creating a compliant, manufacturable and commercially viable product.

The IKONYX Approach

Having experienced the limitations of separating development and production, MagicTrix adopted the IKONYX design-to-box model.

Design engineers, production specialists, tooling experts, material suppliers and manufacturing teams worked together throughout the programme.

This allowed performance, manufacturability and cost to be balanced continuously rather than sequentially.

When the design team evaluated solutions, production specialists provided immediate feedback on cost implications. Material specialists guided the selection of certified medical-grade materials that were both suitable for the application and readily available within the supply chain.

The result was faster decision-making, lower risk and a more robust route to production.

Medical Device Compliance

Bringing the product to market required more than design and manufacturing.

As the legal manufacturer, MagicTrix needed to establish the appropriate medical device compliance systems before the product could be sold.

Working alongside IKONYX, Compliant Medical helped accelerate this process, supporting MagicTrix in achieving the necessary certification and market readiness.

This ensured the product could progress efficiently from development into commercial supply.

The Outcome

MagicTrix successfully transitioned from distributor to product owner, bringing a compliant, high-quality medical product to market.

The integrated development and manufacturing approach allowed the business to recover lost time, avoid further costly mistakes and establish a dependable supply chain for future growth.

Most importantly, the business gained ownership of a product specifically designed for its market, supported by a production system capable of delivering consistent quality at volume.

What This Demonstrates

MagicTrix demonstrates that successful products are rarely defined by their apparent simplicity.

Even seemingly straightforward products can become complex when performance, cost, manufacturing scale and regulatory requirements must all be satisfied simultaneously.

By integrating design, compliance, supply chain and manufacturing into a single process, IKONYX helped transform a difficult and delayed programme into a successful commercial product.
