From Concept to Production in Three Months
The Challenge
In April 2020, the world changed almost overnight.
As demand for hand sanitisation products surged, Handi Technologies found themselves with a product that could not scale quickly enough to meet the opportunity.
The existing solution was never intended for high-volume manufacture, and demand was arriving far faster than traditional product development timelines could accommodate.
A typical programme involving product design, tooling, validation and production would often take close to a year.
Handi needed a solution in three months.
The Risk
Compressing a development programme by this magnitude introduces significant risk.
Every decision has the potential to impact:
- Product performance.
- Manufacturing readiness.
- Tooling schedules.
- Supply chain availability.
- Production quality.
- Delivery deadlines.
Without careful coordination, speed quickly becomes the enemy of success.
The challenge was to move quickly without compromising the outcome.
The IKONYX Approach
The integrated IKONYX model was designed for exactly this type of challenge.
Because product design, tooling, manufacturing and production planning operate as one coordinated team, decisions could be made and implemented immediately.
Fast communication alone was not enough.
The project required disciplined risk management, with every design decision evaluated against the realities of tooling, manufacture and delivery.
By continuously balancing opportunity against risk, the programme remained both ambitious and achievable.
The result was a product that could be delivered within an extraordinary timeframe while still retaining the quality, usability and character expected of a commercial product.
The Outcome
The project successfully progressed from concept to production within the three-month target window.
Beyond solving an immediate pandemic challenge, the product also created value for customers long after the initial demand surge.
The design deliberately maximised available branding space, allowing organisations to promote their own identity through a simple wrap system.
As a result, Handi became a familiar presence at major events and public venues, including the European Tour and the G7 Summit in Cornwall.
What This Demonstrates
Handi demonstrates that speed is rarely the result of working harder.
It is the result of removing friction.
When product design, tooling, manufacturing and production planning operate as a single team, decisions happen faster, risks are identified earlier and opportunities can be seized before they disappear.
The project remains a strong example of how integrated development and manufacturing can turn an impossible timeline into a viable commercial programme.
