When Design for Manufacture Becomes Reality
The Challenge
Adam Health had already invested in the development of its sensor platform and was preparing to move into production.
The product had been professionally designed and was expected to be manufacturing ready.
However, as production planning began, it became clear that successfully manufacturing the product at scale would require additional engineering work and careful consideration of assembly, tooling, quality control and supply chain management.
Like many businesses, Adam Health discovered that product design and production readiness are not always the same thing.
The Risk
A product can appear complete while still carrying significant manufacturing risk.
Without sufficient attention to production processes, businesses can encounter:
- Unexpected assembly complexity.
- Increased labour costs.
- Quality inconsistencies.
- Supply chain challenges.
- Delays to production ramp-up.
The challenge was to ensure the product could be manufactured repeatedly and reliably while preserving the design intent and performance of the device.
The IKONYX Approach
IKONYX worked closely with Adam Health to bridge the gap between product development and production reality.
Rather than treating manufacturing as a separate activity, production engineering, tooling, assembly methods and quality requirements were evaluated as part of the overall product solution.
This process required careful engineering judgement to balance manufacturability, cost, performance and quality while respecting the existing product architecture.
The result was a production solution capable of delivering the product consistently and to the standards expected within the healthcare sector.
The Outcome
The Adam Sensor successfully progressed into manufacture and continues to be supplied by IKONYX.
More importantly, the collaboration created a deeper understanding of the relationship between product development and manufacturing.
As a result, Adam Health increasingly engages IKONYX earlier in the development process, allowing manufacturing considerations to inform product decisions from the outset.
This approach has supported the continued expansion of the product portfolio and strengthened the partnership between the two organisations.
What This Demonstrates
Adam Health demonstrates that manufacturing success is rarely determined by design alone.
True Design for Manufacture extends beyond CAD models and design reviews. It requires a detailed understanding of tooling, assembly, supply chain management, quality systems and production realities.
By connecting those disciplines together, IKONYX helps businesses move from a product that works to a product that can be reliably manufactured and supplied.
